How is the Discover Current Card different from a credit card and a bank debit card?

With a credit card, you receive a line of credit that you repay either the entire balance, or make monthly installment payments with interest. If you spend more than the credit limit you have to pay over the limit fees.

When you use a debit card, funds come directly out of your checking account, but you still run the risk of being overdrawn and incurring large overdraft fees.

The Discover Current Card is a deposit account that allows parents to decide where and how much a teen can spend and it ensures that they can’t spend more than they have. Using the card won’t affect a teen’s credit history. There are no overlimit or overdraft fees and no interest charges.

On top of its existing benefits and 30-day money back guarantee, Wired Plastic now offers an automated payment service called Click-n-Pay. In order describe this new prepaid credit card service, we’ve put together and answered the following questions.

What is Click-n-Pay?
Click-n-Pay is Wired Plastic’s automated payment service that allows you to send a one-time or recurring electronic payment to thousands of billers listed in our database, or send a paper check to anyone. Since the payment amount is immediately deducted from your available balance, you will never incur a bounced check or over the limit fee. Avoiding this fee alone is a great reason to pay your bills with a Wired Plastic card instead of using your checking account.

How do I use Click-n-Pay?
You can access Click-n-Pay online via our website to set up billers, send payments and view your transaction history or you can do it over the phone using our toll-free account information line.

Who can I pay using Click-n-Pay?
You can pay anyone using Click-n-Pay, unlike most other bill-pay programs. If the person you want to send a payment to isn’t listed in our biller database, we will send them a paper check on your behalf.

How much does it cost to use Click-n-Pay?
Click-n-Pay service is available for only $0.45 per electronic payment and $0.95 per paper check.

The Facecard prepaid Mastercard is the only card that offers you rewards. They are called Prewards and are like coupons that are added directly to your account. We’ve answered 5 questions about Prewards below.

1) What is a Preward?

A preward is a digital incentive, like a coupon that is automatically added to your Facecard.

Merchants in the Facecard partner network send digital coupons to your Facecard for you to enjoy at their store, restaurant or place of business. You don’t have to do anything to get Prewards except sign up for a Facecard.

2) How will I know when I receive a Preward?

Facecard will notify you of new Prewards via email. These digital incentives will also be visible on your secure dashboard when you log in at www.facecard.com.

3) Can I use the Preward anywhere?

Each Preward invitation will outline the specific location(s), expiration date and other details of the offering.

4) What happens when I accept the Preward offer?

Once accepted, the Preward will be added to your Facecard for your use. Note that receiving an invitation is not the same as receiving a Preward. You must accept the Preward within the specified period of time to have it loaded onto your Facecard. Accepting a Preward is easy - all you need to do is click on “Accept” which is listed under Manage Prewards in your dashboard.

5) How do I redeem a Preward?

Use your Facecard at the merchant that offered the Preward, and the coupon deposited to your Facecard will be credited toward your purchase. For example, if you have a $2 Preward for your favorite burger place, and a burger costs $5, only $3 will be deducted from your Facecard when you purchase a burger.

There are two new Rushcards in the prepaid credit card market called the Prepaid Visa® Black Diamond RushCard and the Prepaid Visa® Purple Diamond RushCard. I recently went to the Rushcard website to find out how the two Diamond cards were different from their two other cards. I had to dig through the site to find anything because the only page I found that tells you what the difference is was the schedule of fees page.

The Diamond Rushcards appear to be different only in their fees. There is a monthly fee of $9.95 for the Diamond cards, but not for the regular cards. The initial fee for the Diamond cards is $3 where the fee for the regular cards is $19.95. The are more differences. With the regular cards ATM withdrawals are $1.95 each, but the Diamond card gives you two free withdrawals a month, then they are $2.50 each. If you use your card as a credit card (signing instead of using a pin) it’s free with the Diamond cards, but $1 each time you do it with the regular cards with a maximum charge of $10 a month. Both cards charge you $0.50 to check your balance at an ATM.

The fees for bill pay and card replacement are the same for both cards and there are no fees to add money to the cards.

Based on the fee structure it looks like you will only benefit from the Diamond cards if you make only one or two withdrawls a month so you’ll get the two free withdrawals and if you make at least ten purchases a month. If you make less than 10 purchases and make several atm withdrawals a month you are better off with the regular Rushcards.

A prepaid credit card is not a credit card, since no credit is offered by the card issuer. The cardholder spends money which has been stored via a prior deposit by the cardholder or someone else. Prepaid cards may be issued to a specific store or may carry a credit card brand (Visa, MasterCard, American Express or Discover) and can be used just as though it were a regular credit card.

Prepaid cards can be issued to minors (above 13) because there is no credit line involved. With prepaid credit cards you are not charged any interest but you are often charged a purchasing fee plus monthly fees. Other fees also usually apply to a prepaid card. Check the card’s terms of service before you apply.

The Facecard prepaid MasterCard® is an execellent prepaid card because it has no activation, montly or annual fees. The Facecard also allows you to setup bill pay and you can have your paycheck automatically deposited to your card.

Prepaid cards issued by banks and organizations are a new way for consumers to conduct financial transactions and make payments. There are many situations where a prepaid card might be the most convenient choice, but be sure you understand the key terms and conditions before you apply online for a prepaid card.

Find the answers to these two questions when considering a prepaid card:

1) What are the possible fees associated with using the card?

2) Can the prepaid card be used like a credit card? (online, at ATMs, outside the U.S.)?
Reputable distributors of prepaid cards will give you the terms and conditions in writing or have them available on their website. If you don’t understand how your card works, ask for help by contacting the customer service number on the card.

Prepaid Card Protections

The federal government does not guarantee the same protections for all prepaid cards, but many “branded” cards voluntarily carry the same protections as credit and debit cards. Prepaid credit cards with a major credit card brand logo like Visa or MasterCard provide consumer protections, such as replacing lost or stolen cards and refunding money after unauthorized use of the card. To get these benefits, you have to be sure to follow the directions for activating and registering your new card. Be sure to record the customer service telephone number that is on the back of the card in a safe place in case your card is lost or stolen.

If you have a problem with your prepaid card contact the customer service via the number on the back of the card. If the problem still isn’t resolved, you may want to file a complaint with the proper authorities:

For cards issued by national banks, contact the Comptroller of the Currency.

For cards issued by retailers, contact the FTC. You may also file a complaint with your local consumer protection office.

Do you own a business? Are you looking for ways to make your accounting easier to deal with? You should provide your employees with a reloadable prepaid card for business expenses. A prepaid business credit card is a great way to track employee expenses and it keeps your employees from spending more than you’d like.

If an employee is going on a business trip you can load their card with the maximum you want them to spend and they can’t go over it. You can easily load the card with money online through the card company’s website. You can also use their website to track how the money was spent. Now you can provide employees with an expense account that they can’t go over and you won’t be charged high interest rates and ridiculous fees from a credit card company.

The prepaid business card we recommend is the PEX Visa® Prepaid Card For Business. This business prepaid card offers the following:

Manage spending for staff in the field

Alternative to credit cards, petty cash, check reimbursements

Enforce budgets with individual card balances

Control spending by merchant category and daily limits

Online program management

No transaction or card load fees - simple pricing

No credit check required
